Quick Opening Manways
Quick opening manways are specially designed to maximize production in
batch-type operations by providing rapid and easy access to pressure vessels.

When compared to other manways that use nut and bolt or swing bolt sealing mechanisms, quick opening manways can save between 10 and 60 minutes of production time per vessel for batch processes. The manway opens in a single motion without the aid of tools, allowing an operator to gain access to the vessel in less than 3 seconds.

There are no loose parts or heavy covers, and built-in safety features protect the operator by making it virtually impossible to open a quick opening manway while it is still under pressure.

We manufacture three basic quick-opening manways:

QOD | QOL | QOR

All have built-in safety features which prevent accidents during use. These include slow release of pressure when improperly opened or closed.

QOD MANWAYS

The QOD manway is custom designed and used primarily for special situations.

It incorporates a domed cover, O-ring sealing system and a quick opening cam-actuated latch mechanism that makes it perfect for pressure or vacuum applications. Available in four styles, the QOD has a flanged body and is ideal for processes using glass-lined reaction vessels. The cam-actuated latch allows opening within seconds and the built in safety feature prevents accidental opening.

QOD manways are sealed by a 5/16" diameter O-ring that is located in a recess on the tapered outer surface of the frame. It snaps in place over the neck into a groove and remains in place when the manway is open. The location of the groove also serves to protect the gasket during access operations. The internal taper of the cover edge imposes sliding radial compression, creating an effective seal with very tight gasket load.

QOD's are available in all ferrous and non-ferrous materials and since QOD manways are all custom products, they are designed to customer specifications. QOD's are totally without bolts. A cover tension spring is used for vertical installations to reduce the force required to lift or close the cover. Options include provision for a sight glass and lubrication fittings at active points. Remote control actuators can also be custom designed. Our QOD's are suitable for service up to 250 psi and temperatures as high as 400°F.

QOL MANWAYS

The QOL manway is a quick-opening, latch door manway designed for rapid access to pressure vessels.

The QOL helps reduce labor costs associated with the time-consuming removal of nuts and bolts found in standard bolted flange  manways.

It provides rapid access with a minimum of moving parts and consists of a frame, a cover with lateral ribs and locking safety hooks, a gasket, a hinge mechanism and a cam-actuated latch mechanism. The frame is recessed to receive the gasket and the cover is registered to fit the frame precisely.

To open the QOL, the operator lifts the latch mechanism until the cam clears the safety hooks and then swings open the cover. To close, he simply reverses the procedure. The cover registers precisely with the frames gasket recess and manual effort compresses the gasket and allows the latch cam to seal the manway.

A special safety hook system means that even if the manway were manually pried open during pressurization, the cover would not be able to open fully. Further, if the cover should move, (maximum movement can occur only to the limit of the cam rise), the gasket would normally maintain tightness. QOL manways are adaptable to vacuum service. An O-ring cover recess is available as an option which makes the QOL operational under vacuum conditions.

QOR MANWAYS

The QOR Manway is a basic quick-opening manway that uses pins as a means of cover locking. Constructed similarly to the QOL, it consists of a frame with four welded lugs, a cover with two lateral ribs (drilled at the ends to match up with the mounting lugs) and two free fitting pins. The cover is registered to the frame and is joined by running the pins through holes in the mounting lugs and rib ends. Opening is accomplished by removing one of the pins (the other serves as a hinge) and swinging open the door.

QOR manways are virtually impossible to open when the vessel is pressurized.

Internal pressure moves the cover outward sufficiently enough to lock the pins in place while maintaining a perfect seal.
